How to connect to Hyper-V Server 2019

Hyper-V Server 2019 is a free hypervisor, developed by Microsoft, providing a simple and reliable virtualization solution.

The Windows hypervisor technology in Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 is the same as what's in the Microsoft Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2019. It is a stand-alone product that contains only the Windows hypervisor, a Windows Server driver model, and virtualization components.

Enable Remote Management on your Dedibox server

All Powershell commands have to be executed in a Windows Powershell with Administrator permission.
  1. Connect (RDP) with your Administrateur password to your Dedibox server.
  2. Download and install latest Windows Updates (Option 6).
  3. Reboot the server to apply latest Windows Updates.
  4. Enable PSRemoting: Enable-PSRemoting
  5. Allow Remote Access to the machine: Enable-WSManCredSSP -Role server
  6. Allow your public IP to manage this Hyper-V Server:
Set-NetFirewallRule -Name 'WINRM-HTTP-In-TCP' -RemoteAddress "WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ"
Set-NetFirewallRule -Name 'WINRM-HTTP-In-TCP-PUBLIC' -RemoteAddress "WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ"

Allow Hyper-V remote management from your own PC or server

  1. Add your Dedibox server on your hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ SD-XXXXX
  2. Add the Hyper-V Server host to the trusted hosts: Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts -Value “SD-XXXXX”
  3. Allow the credentials to be delegated to the Hyper-V host: Enable-WSManCredSSP -Role client -DelegateComputer “SD-XXXXX”
  4. Open the gpedit.msc application and go to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Credentials Delegation. Enable and add wsman/SD-XXXXX to each NTLM-only setting.

Connect to your Hyper-V Dedibox Server

  1. Right-Click on Hyper-V Manager, and select Connect to server….
  2. Select Another computer and type the name of your Dedibox: SD-XXXXX.
  3. Check the box Connect as another user, then use the local admin account of your Dedibox.

You can now deploy a virtual machine (see our Scaleway tutorial).
