IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) is a system for the remote administration and observation of your server's hardware. It allows you to:

  • Switch your server off or on and to reboot it remotely.
  • Control all parts of your server: Temperature, voltage, fan status, operating time…
  • You can configure automatic notification (mail, snmp …) in case of a problem with your hardware (hard disk, temperature, fans, voltages and failure of the power supply…)
  • Check and manage all informations (logs) from the BIOS
  • Access to the serial port and the BIOS over the network (serial console)

It is realised by a BMC (Baseboard Management Controller), a totally independent hardware, composed of a I2C BUS and a dedicated processor, connected to your network card. It even works in case your server has crashed totally or is out of service.
